It is an erect, perennial shrub. It has a tuberous rhizome.
The stem is cylindrical, smooth, soft and fleshy. The tallest stems fall over and remain lying on the ground. The leaves are simple, spirally arranged, dark green, glossy. They are oblong to lanceolate in shape with a pointed tip. The margin is entire and veins are parallel to each other. The flowers are borne terminal, compact, conical spike inflorescence. The flowers are showy, beautiful and attracts bees. They are sessile, surrounded by bracts and bracteoles. The petals are fused and yellow to orange in color, covered with brown design. The fruit is an inconspicuous capsule.
